CNDH takes part in the NHRIs-COP27 Symposium on Protecting Environmental Human Rights defenders and Promoting Meaningful Participation in Climate Talks - The Role of NHRIs

Mr. Mounir Bensalah, Secretary General of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), participated remotely on Wednesday  2 November 2022, in the NHRIs-COP27 Symposium on "Protecting Environmental Human Rights defenders and Promoting Meaningful Participation in Climate Talks - The Role of NHRIs ", hosted by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), in collaboration with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Development Program  (UNDP) under the framework of the Tripartite Partnership (TPP).

In his statement, Mr. Bensalah highlighted the CNDH's interest in the climate change issue. In this context, he recalled that Morocco is facing challenges posed by climate change, including the current situation of water stress, the vulnerability of several regions, erosion, challenges in terms of biodiversity, and migrations triggered by climate change.

CNDH Secretary General also underlined that fighting climate change and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are conditioned by the full involvement of all society components. He also stressed that this phenomenon is threatening the stability of societies and challenging all national and international human rights management systems.

Within this context, Mr. Bensalah noted that the environment and associated rights are addressed in a transversal way in the CNDH strategies. He emphasized that the new CNDH strategy places environmental rights and sustainable development at the core of every action and initiative.

Mr. Bensalah shed light on the CNDH’s several recommendations, contained in its various reports, calling for reinforcing the protection of human rights defenders, particularly women.

The annual United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 will take place from 6 to 18 November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. It will bring together States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and thousands of experts, journalists and representatives of business and non-governmental organizations.
