CNDH participate at the seminar on cultural rights and the protection of cultural heritage

The National Human Rights Council of Morocco (CNDH) participated in the Inter-sessional seminar on cultural rights and the protection of cultural heritage organized by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on 7 July 2017 at the Palais des Nations, Geneva.

The CNDH was represented by Mr. Mustapha Jlok, chargé de mission. In his statement, he stressed the role of the national human rights institutions (NHRIs) in monitoring and advocating for the protection of cultural heritage. He also highlighted the experience of the CNDH in the southern provinces of Morocco, which helped protect some heritage sites from destruction and created local and regional dynamics within civil society. The CNDH also underlined the importance of culture and heritage in development.

In accordance with Resolution 33/20 on cultural rights and the protection of cultural heritage, this seminar aims at addressing ways to prevent, contain and/or mitigate the detrimental impact of the damage to, or destruction of, cultural heritage on the enjoyment of human rights, including cultural rights by all, and on best practices in this regard.

The Resolution 33/20 adopted by the Human Rights Council (HRC) on 6 October 2016 calls on all States to respect, promote and protect the right of everyone to take part in cultural life, including the ability to access and enjoy the cultural heritage, and to take relevant actions to achieve this objective. This resolution also decides that the HRC will remain seized of this matter.
